GGU Law Revives Distinguished Lecture Series

Following a COVID-19 hiatus, the 2022-23 Editorial Board of the GGU Law Review revived the Annual Chief Justice Ronald M. George Distinguished Lecture Series, named after legendary former Chief Justice of California Ronald M. George. The lecture series highlights the court’s vital role by bringing together judicial leaders to share their perspectives on critical issues facing the judiciary.

On March 31, 2023, the Law Review welcomed the Honorable Senior Circuit Judge for the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals, Carlos T. Bea, for an evening of repartee. The Editor-in-Chief, Thomas Langtry, discussed the history of the event and highlighted the notes and case summaries to be published in the Law Review’s forthcoming Ninth Circuit Survey edition, the only law review journal in the nation dedicated exclusively to decisions issued by the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. Attendees then heard from Brian Gillis, one of the Law Review’s Executive Articles Editors, who discussed his Note, “Sackett v. U.S. Environmental Protection Agency: ‘Waters of the United States’ Defined by 0.63 Acres.”

Afterward, Dean Colin Crawford gave a welcoming introduction of the Honorable Judge Bea. Judge Bea presented a well-structured and thoughtful talk on “The Promotion of Liberty through the Separation of Powers,” followed by a question-and-answer session. When the lecture concluded, all attendees adjourned to the Great Hall of the Ninth Circuit’s James R. Browning Courthouse for a reception featuring chef-prepared appetizers and a selection of locally-produced beverages. Attendees enjoyed refreshments and conversation while mingling their way through the stunning architecture of the Great Hall.

The Law Review would like to thank Judge Bea and his team, the sponsors, presenters, the student and faculty volunteers, and all who attended for helping make the return of this annual event a tremendous success.
